Cleowyn Quest bug

It happened to me a couple times already with different characters and companions.

Going through the Cleowyn Quest, once passed the Rune Room riddle and with all three relics in my pockets -all of us, actually-, then we start placing them on the niches to finish the quest.

But then for some reason, some of the objects just doesn't work. First time it was the robe, second it was the scepter. Usually the object is automatically moved into the niche and the layer has to do nothing. But then it shows the standard message as if you didn't have the object, for all characters in party.

Might have something to do with splitting the party at some pint during the quest, or teleporting to tavern, no idea, but it's quite frustrating as it happens at the end of a long way there.

I am sorry to hear that you've run up against this issue. Your intuition here is correct - when a character leaves a party, and when a character leaves the dungeon, the character's dungeon state flags will be reset. This is a relic of the old game's design, and appears in this remake because the server runs a transpiled copy of the old game's map scripts.

Your experiences on the old INN server may have been similar - I recall characters admonishing each other not to leave maps once they began specific quests. While it would be hypothetically possible to fix this, I worry that I would break something else in the process.

My advice to you is that once you begin a quest with several steps that occurs on the same map, you should complete the quest without leaving the map. Not an ideal solution, I grant you - but it is *a* solution.
