i was able to move 4 times (dying on the 5th) in lake despair with the life jacket, but now i can only move 3 times (dying on the 4th) and this makes me unable to get the fellowship key again when it was taken from me by the skeleton key reforging prerequisite (the class armor room). cannot progress the game now, i think.

it is removing exactly 25 percent of my health each step. previously i ended step 4 with like 1 HP... perhaps my then-max HP was not evenly divisible by 4, like it is now? so the 4th step puts me to exactly 0 health, whereas before it would put me to 1 HP?

3 steps is correct i can get there find the right island

it is impossible to get to the key's finish line in 3 steps from any valid island. the final middle island (the vertex in the V shape near the top) is 5 steps away from the platform where you get the key

just tested it on every possible island and the only valid island in range is the one five steps away from the key area. trying to move from that island to any other potential safe zone in range leads to the monster eating me.

dont step on monsyer turn up instead

again, i just literally tested EVERY single possible combination of islands, and every single time i die before i can reach the key. something is not right, especially since i got the fellowship key previously (but lost it to the skeleton key event) and took 5 steps in doing so, and all the guides say it takes 5 steps.

i think there is a bug when someones HP is evenly divisible by 4. thats the issue.

i just grinded to a new level where my HP is NOT evenly divisible by 4.... and lo and behold i was able to survive. four steps put me at 1 HP... then the 5th to safety. i have the key now.

Sorry for the trouble Annul. What is the correct behaviour - should it always allow you to walk four steps (taking 25 percent each step until you hit 1 hp, and then killing you on the 5th step)?

Good news! After many missteps and deep consultation of Nigel's Guide (as updated by Ragnar - the version available at medievalands.com/help), I've managed to cross Lake Despair in no more than 4 steps at a time. It's the final run that proves the most perilous - you have to turn north and take a breather before wading to the south (where the ending is).
