I'm embarrassed to not know the answer to this one. In the middle of the Great Corridor, there are the two doors marked for the Challenge of Harmony and the Challenge of Chaos. There are warnings on the doors to only do the challenge corresponding to your character's alignment. I remember, many years ago, doing both challenges, and seeing that there's an ominous message displayed when you do the wrong alignment's challenge.

What does that actually do? Is there a permanent effect on your character?

I did it also, one reference said it negatively effected stats.

From what I recall when I did it, I lost experience points, which was recoverable.

Aha--reading old threads in General Discussion, I see that this was asked and answered in the "Stat loss from alignment" thread: in original Yserbius, you indeed got a permanent stat loss from going through the wrong alignment's challenge. In Medievalands, Zane made it so that you instead lose a bunch of XP, but there's no permanent harm to the character. Interesting!
